The Burden of Loneliness Imagery, Motifs, and Messages in Kitchen - Literature Essay Samples
In the Japanese novel, Kitchen, translated by Megan Backus, the author, Banana Yoshimoto, manipulates the motif of light in constructing ups and downs in Mikageââ¬â¢s life to show that loneliness leads to despair, while a connection to others induces happiness. Firstly, Yoshimoto indicates times of joy with light, and times of despair with darkness. Secondly, Yoshimoto draws parallels between Mikage being alone and feeling despondent. In contrast, Yoshimoto shows correspondence between a connection to others and pleasure. Essentially, the motif of light and dark is very carefully interwoven with the themes of loneliness and relationships with others in demonstrating the ebbs and flows of life. Yoshimoto contrasts light and dark to denote the good and bad times in life, respectively, and how swiftly they occur in succession. For example, following her grandmotherââ¬â¢s death, Mikage states that she is alone in the ââ¬Å"blackness of the cosmosâ⬠(Yoshimoto 4). Yoshimotoââ¬â¢s vivid imagery points to the idea that Mikage is in fact extremely in despair over her grandmotherââ¬â¢s death, especially since she was Mikageââ¬â¢s last surviving family. However, in contrast to Mikageââ¬â¢s sadness, Yoshimoto introduces Yuichi as someone ââ¬Å"glowing with white lightâ⬠after offering Mikage a place to have dinner (Yoshimoto 7). Yoshimotoââ¬â¢s description of Yuichi as Mikageââ¬â¢s knight in shining armor clearly demonstrates the correlation between light and happiness. Moreover, the chronological juxtaposition of these events shows how quickly life changes. Additionally, when Mikage is contemplating how she is the only one left in her family, she sta tes that everyone will eventually ââ¬Å"disappear, scattered into the blackness of timeâ⬠(Yoshimoto 21). Yoshimotoââ¬â¢s seemingly exaggerated explanation of a personââ¬â¢s fate reflects Mikageââ¬â¢s mood, as dark as the blackness of time. Furthermore, when Mikage returns to her old apartment again, she describes it as ââ¬Å"coldâ⬠and ââ¬Å"darkâ⬠after reflecting once more on the fact that when her grandmother died, ââ¬Å"time died, tooâ⬠in the apartment (Yoshimoto 22). Therefore, Yoshimotoââ¬â¢s use of diction that makes the apartment seem very unfriendly perfectly portrays Mikageââ¬â¢s mood, which is represented by the personification of time. In addition, after Erikoââ¬â¢s death, Mikage describes Yuichiââ¬â¢s face as giving off a ââ¬Å"dim glowâ⬠(Yoshimoto 50). Yoshimotoââ¬â¢s employment of a tempered form of light shows the mood of the scene, as both Mikage and Yuichi are extremely saddened by Erikoââ¬â¢s death. Moreover, Yoshimotoââ¬â¢s purpose of incorporating a weaker form of light into Yuichiââ¬â¢s description is to display the hope for happiness that Mikage and Yuichi share. Lastly, Yoshimoto contrasts the ââ¬Å"light that warms the hearts of those around [Eriko]â⬠when she was alive to the ââ¬Å"heavy shadow of despairâ⬠that descended upon Mikage and Yuichi after her death (Yoshimoto 54). This contrast dictates the positive moods of those around Eriko with light, and the crushing desolation of them with a heavy shadow of darkness. On one hand, Yoshimoto displays the causal effect of loneliness on despair, and how it causes even more sadness than the death of a loved one. For example, after her grandmotherââ¬â¢s death, Mikage realized that she was ââ¬Å"all alone,â⬠leading to her being ââ¬Å"steeped in a sadness so great [she] could barely cryâ⬠(Yoshimoto 4). Yoshimoto further advances Mikageââ¬â¢s grief by having her simply on the kitchen floor â â¬Å"three days after the funeralâ⬠(Yoshimoto 4,5). The way Yoshimoto frames the situation, by having Mikage still be completely shellshocked three days, plainly shows the substantial impact of loneliness. In addition, Yoshimoto utilizes the medium of dreams to reveal more of the effects of loneliness, as shown when Mikage, the night on which she cried out all her feelings about losing her grandmother, dreamed that she and Yuichi sang the lyrics ââ¬Å"A lighthouse in the distanceââ¬â¢to the two of us in the nightâ⬠(Yoshimoto 38). Yoshimotoââ¬â¢s use of symbolism of the lighthouse and the night help exhibit Mikageââ¬â¢s loneliness, since even though the lighthouse symbolizes hope, Mikage and Yuichi may never reach it because they are essentially all alone in the night. Also, following Erikoââ¬â¢s death, Mikage tells Yuichi, ââ¬Å"In this gigantic universe, there cannot be a pair like usâ⬠(Yoshimoto 50). In having Mikage state that, Yoshimoto is not mer ely implying the uniqueness of the relationship between the two, but how alone they are in their struggle, as they are left without any family, a struggle very few people actually know. However, Yoshimoto is not just stating that loneliness is just a cause for griefââ¬â¢she is actually saying that loneliness trumps the death of a loved one as a cause for despair. For example, after Mikageââ¬â¢s grandmother dies, she states that she was ââ¬Å"taken by surpriseâ⬠(Yoshimoto 4). Thus, Yoshimotoââ¬â¢s choice of using diction that does not imply that Mikage was heartbroken shows how Mikage was not necessarily completely dejected at the loss of her grandmother. This is further shown when Mikage states that her ââ¬Å"love for [her] own grandmotherâ⬠was ââ¬Å"nothing compared to [Yuichiââ¬â¢s]â⬠(Yoshimoto 7). Yoshimoto is again implying that Mikage was not necessarily too attached to her grandmother. Therefore, it is not so much that her grandmotherââ¬â¢s death was the cause of her despair, rather, the situation she was left in, utterly alone, caused her to sink near the depths of depression. On the other hand, Yoshimoto details the relati onship between having a connection with others and alleviation of despair. An example of this is when Mikage says that after she first started living with the Tanabes, on the heels of her dealing with her grandmotherââ¬â¢s death, ââ¬Å"light and air came into [her] heartâ⬠(Yoshimoto 21). Yoshimotoââ¬â¢s metaphor demonstrates just one example of how a connection with other people can take away burdens. Moreover, upon returning to her old apartment and feeling sad when finding it to be akin to a ââ¬Å"strangerââ¬â¢s house,â⬠Mikage becomes ecstatic after receiving a call from Sotaro, wanting to ââ¬Å"weep with nostalgiaâ⬠at the ââ¬Å"sound of his voiceâ⬠(Yoshimoto 23). By having Mikage have a somewhat exaggerated reaction just by hearing Sotaroââ¬â¢s voice, Yoshimoto establishes the importance of connections with others, and how they can drag one out of the depths of sorrow. Also, Yoshimoto conveys this message through the motif of food. For exam ple, after grieving about Erikoââ¬â¢s death, Mikage and Yuichi decide to make a ââ¬Å"professional dinner,â⬠to which Mikage responds ââ¬Å"enthusiasticallyâ⬠(Yoshimoto 54). Thus, simply through the sharing of food with another person, Yoshimoto displays how one can swiftly shift from feelings of sadness to feelings of joy. When Yoshimoto later has Yuichi be saddened over the lack of food choices at the inn he was staying at, Mikage brings him katsudon, making him happier (Yoshimoto 98). By using food as a mode of communication, Yoshimoto spotlights the connection between Mikage and Yuichi. However, Yoshimotoââ¬â¢s message is not about Yuichiââ¬â¢s disdain for eating tofuââ¬â¢it is about ââ¬Å"separatingâ⬠himself from his ââ¬Å"strange life,â⬠which seems to only bring despair (Yoshimoto 99). Yet, through the connection Yoshimoto establishes between Mikage and Yuichi, a ââ¬Å"lighthearted mood [was] reestablished,â⬠and Yuichiââ¬â¢s pain was assuaged (Yoshimoto 101). Therefore, through connections with others, dejection can be relieved. Indeed, Yoshimotoââ¬â¢s claim is sound in both the specific sense of the novel and in a more general sense in life. In particular, when one is lonely, there is no one to reach out to, thus creating a sense of despair if there was none be fore or augmenting the already existing despair. Moreover, when one has connections with others, it becomes easier to alleviate any existing distress. Plainly, a connection with someone allows one to share their burden, instead of living it all alone. While the argument that most of us currently communicate frequently through online mediums while sitting at home alone exists, it canââ¬â¢t be said that we are truly alone. Even without a face-to-face connection with friends, just communicating can still help to remove any personal load. Therefore, Yoshimotoââ¬â¢s practical argument applies not just in the novel, but in a broader sense. Ultimately, Yoshimoto advances the idea that connections with others brings one away from anguish, while loneliness drives one ever so closer to it.

Dressed upin my Halloween costume a week, before it was even Halloween my five-year-old self ready to leave for a concert. This was my first concert. We drove downtown to the Denver Performing Arts Center; everywhere I looked I saw people in Halloween costumes flocking towards the Boettcher Concert Hall, where the Colorado Symphony was performing. I do not remember much about the concert exceptthat I really enjoyed it. That year we went back to more symphony concerts, the appearance of Santa and Mrs.Claus running down the aisle right next to me during the Christmas concert made that one my favorite. Soon, going to the symphony became a tradition. In elementary school we had three different specials: art, gym, and music. My favorite was always music, I loved that we got to sing, play rhythmic games, and play instruments. In fourth grade I joined the Choir at my school.I loved to sing . I am the person I am today because of this love.Marching band is a big time commitment. From the beginning of August until the end of October bandpractices for more than ten hours a week.I take honors level and AP courses; juggling my homework load, marching band, a job, book club, and whatever life throws at me has taught me how to manage my time. In marching band ââ¬Å"earlyâ⬠is on time, ââ¬Å"on timeâ⬠is late, and ââ¬Å"lateâ⬠is dead. That lesson has carried over into other areas of my life, leading me to be a very punctual person. In choir and band we set goals, we are always working toward something: a concert, a competition, a score, etc. Iamvery goal oriented because of this. I like to set goals for myself, if I do not know what I am working toward or why I am doing something itââ¬â¢s hard to do the work. My goals motivate me. I hope to live a life that will be fulfilling and filled with happiness. Going to college is the first step towards finding a c areer that will make me feel fulfilled and finding something that will make me happy. I am very dedicated; if I say Iââ¬â¢m going to do something I do it and I give it all that I can. If I have a rehearsal or performance of some type I will do everything in my power to be there. I got concert tickets for my birthday, but ended up skipping the concert because I had marching band. Without music in my life I would not be the dedicated, hardworking, goal-oriented person that I am today. I have learned so many lessons from music and performing and these 650 words donââ¬â¢t do justice to what music has given me. I am thankful to my Grandma for taking me to the Colorado Symphony when I was little, and for all the music teachers that I have had ; it is because of them that I fell in love with music and became who I am today.

Colin Mudford is a 12 year old boy who lives in Australia. In the beginning his character is rowdy, rogue and rebellious. The line ââ¬ËWhy wouldnââ¬â¢t the ambulance driver let me in the ambulance? Eh? Iââ¬â¢ve never been in an ambulance. Why wouldnââ¬â¢t she? ââ¬â¢ indicates Colinââ¬â¢s arrogance and unwillingness to listen. At the start of the play Colin is a just an immature child who canââ¬â¢t control his emotions. Colinââ¬â¢s cousin Alistair, lives in England with his overprotective parents. Alistairââ¬â¢s personality is anxious, frightened and extremely dependant. ââ¬ËQuickest wayââ¬â¢s by tube, but itââ¬â¢s pretty dangerous. You have to get in the same carriage as dozens of other people. You can catch cold, or flu, or anythingââ¬â¢, this line demonstrates Alistairââ¬â¢s scared and worried personality. There are many differences between Alistair and Colin. Alistairââ¬â¢s personality is timid and shy whereas Colinââ¬â¢s personality is outgoing and wild. Colin and Alistair both face many challenges. Colin faces the challenge of facing and understanding his brotherââ¬â¢s ailment. Colin doesnââ¬â¢t understand Lukeââ¬â¢s illness. He thinks that anything is curable and that the doctors are ââ¬Ëbeinââ¬â¢ slack. ââ¬ËIf they can sew a blokeââ¬â¢s foot in and put a new heart in somebody surely they can cure a bit of cancerââ¬â¢, this quote demonstrates Colinââ¬â¢s inability to cope and understand how great Lukeââ¬â¢s cancer is. Meeting the gay couple, Ted and Griff is one of the causes of Colinââ¬â¢s change in personality. Colin realizes that he isnââ¬â¢t the only one with problems and learns to control his wild emotions. ââ¬ËColin, I know you probably donââ¬â¢t like soppy stuff. But we wanted to say thanks. ââ¬â¢ This line shows that Colin has changed and made a few miserable people happy once more. Colinââ¬â¢s personality also changes because of the separation between him and his family. Alistair changes his personality later on in the play. He gains courage and stands up for himself. What makes you grown-ups so smart that you know whatââ¬â¢s best for everybody? ââ¬â¢ This line shows that Alistair has learnt to be independent and stand up for himself. The challenges of growing up are many. One has to learn how to deal with problems, issues and responsibilities. Learning how to understand and face challenges is another focal point in growing up. Alistair and Colin both deal with these issues in different ways. Colin learns by making new friends and being separated from his family and friends. Alistair faces his challenge with the help and experiences with Colin. Both boys successfully manage and overcome these issues. The personalities of Colin and Alistair change. Alistair changes from being small and unimportant to bold and brave whereas Colin changes from being rowdy and rebellious to understanding and mature. This play helps one understand that growing up is a challenge but with the help of others it becomes much easier.
